Step 1: Read John chapter 20-21 and take notes on what stands out to you.
Step 2: Consider answering some or all of the questions below (may these be a blessing, and not a burden)
Optional Study Questions
- HE HAS RISEN! What evidence of Jesus’ resurrection is recorded in 20:1-21:14?
- Put yourself in Mary’s place in 20:10-18, and read the passage meditatively a few times. How would she feel: (a) Alone at the empty tomb? (b) When Jesus says her name? (c) Why do you think Mary recognized Jesus when He said her name?
- Re-read John 20:19-22. What did the disciples receive? Read Genesis 2:7. How might these two passages be connected?
-
- Optional: dig a little deeper and check out this passage about life giving breath from the Old Testament Prophet, Ezekiel: Ezekiel 37:4-6. What stands out to you?
- Re-read John 20:24-29. In your view, is Thomas’ response to the news of resurrection unreasonable? Why or why not? How do you see Jesus react to Thomas’ doubts?
- In John 21:15-19 Jesus asks Peter three times if he loved Him. Why do you think He did this?
- Explain in your own words the three-fold commission Jesus gave Peter in response to his three-fold declaration of love.
Heart Questions
- Where could use Jesus’ “peace” right now: In some relationship? In some inner fear? In your work? What do you think are some steps you could take to receive more peace in this area?
- How are Jesus’ instructions to you like and unlike those He gave to Peter? How well are you fulfilling your instructions? How could you improve? How could you seek accountability? (Note: if shame or guilt try to sneak their way into this question, hold captive that thought and turn it into a loving invitation to receive more of who Jesus is and what the Father has for you. Adventure, freedom, and the fruits of the Spirit are at hand, not condemnation!)
