John Chapter 17

Optional Study Questions

  1. Re-read John 16:8-11. In your own words, describe the three goals of the work of the Holy Spirit.
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out:  Romans 3:19-20, 1 Peter 3:18
  2. Re-read John 16:16-22. What was the cause of the disciples’ sorrow?
  3. The illustration shows how the same baby that caused the pain, also brought about the joy. God brings joy to our lives, not by substitution, but by transformation. These verses do not show God coming to substitute something for the pain of birth, but transforms the situation into an experience of joy. Romans 8:22 says, “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” When the Bridegroom is away, the Bride mourns (Matt 9:15). The whole world feels the “pangs” of birth while awaiting the return of our Savior. In both our private lives and collectively, maturity comes from pressing in with the Father and the faith that transformation is happening, even if we can’t see it right in front of us.
