Optional Study Questions

  1. Re-read John 11:1-16. Why do you think Jesus deliberately delayed going to the side of Lazarus? (hint: John 11:4)
  2. Re-read John 11:25. Jesus says, “I AM the ________________ and the ________.” (v. 25) Think in a fresh way about this statement. What did Jesus mean by this “I AM” statement?
    1. Optional: Dig a little deeper and check out: 1 Corinthians 15:55-57, Romans 6:23
  3. Re-read John 11: 17-40. What beliefs and emotions do you sense in Martha and Mary’s reactions to Jesus?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: How do these reactions differ from what you might expect based on the story that happened before this incident in Luke 10:38-42?
  4. Re-read John 11:45-55. Why did the religious leaders meet to decide what to do about Jesus?
    1. Optional: Often we speak of the Pharisees as being the main opponent of Jesus in all four Gospels. However, the Pharisees lacked the political power to crucify Jesus and it is the chief priests who were prominent in the events that led to Jesus’ crucifixion. This is why we see Caiaphas the high priest at the time, a Sadducee, was the one to be able to suggest that Jesus be executed for the protection of the nation. See also Matthew 26:3-5, Mark 14:55-56

Heart Questions

  1. God’s timing can feel delayed when we are in the midst of a confusing situation. Can you think of a time where you can see God’s timetable ended up being perfect?
  2. The Greek word for wept describing Jesus in John 11:35 means, “to quietly weep; to shed tears.” Jesus quietly wept. Can you think of any situations where you need to know Jesus is weeping with you?
  3. In John 11: 54-57 we see Jesus retreat in the face of danger to be with his disciples. When life is asking you to walk through tough times, who are the people you pull in closely? Why do you choose them?
