  1. Re-read John 9:1-5. In your own words, how would you explain Jesus’ reply to the disciples’ question about the reason for the man’s blindness (v.2)?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: Isaiah 29:13-14, 18-19; Romans 5:12; Matthew 9:27-31; Mark 8:22-26; Isaiah 35:5-6; Psalms 146:7-8
  2. Re-read John 9:16-17. How is it possible that the religiously trained leaders were so blind to who Jesus was?
    1. Optional: Dig a little deeper and check out: Isaiah 6:9-10, Matthew 13:13-14, Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10, John 12:37-40, John 9:39, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, Proverbs 4:19, Ephesians 4:18, 1 Corinthians 2:14-16
  3. Re-read John 10:1-11. What do the sheep, shepherd, the sheep pen and the stranger seem to represent?
    1. Optional: The term shepherd was used as a metaphor for kings in Israel (2 Samuel 5:2, Jeremiah 3:15). The term is also used in regards to nation of Israel (Psalm 79:13, Isaiah 40:9-11, Ezekiel 34:11-16). Psalm 23:1 is where we see King David call the Lord his shepherd and finally, Jesus is the shepherd of His people (Hebrews 13:20-21, 1 Peter 5:4).
  4. What are some of the specific attributes of a good shepherd seen in Chapter 10 verses: 3, 4, 10, 11, 15, 27-29.
  5. Re-read John 10:11-21 The Lord used the 4th “I AM” statement in the Gospel of John. Jesus says, “I am the ________________ __________________” How is Jesus like a shepherd?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: What are the previous three “I AM” statements in the gospel of John? John 6:35, 8:12, 10:9

Heart Questions

  1. How can you be receptive to Jesus’ shining a light in an area that may be a “spiritual blind spot” for you?
  2. Have you allowed Jesus to be a Good Shepherd to you? If so, how?
  3. In John 10, Jesus speaks about the sheep hearing the Shepherd’s voice.  Would you say you have “heard” the voice of God? If so, how do you discern His voice from all the voices that vie for your attention?  If you haven’t, consider writing a simple note to God below, asking Him to help you recognize His voice.
