John 7 and 8

John Chapter 7
John Chapter 8

Optional Study Questions

Step 1: Read John chapters 7 & 8 and take notes on what stands out to you.

Step 2: Consider answering some or all of the questions below (may these be a blessing, and not a burden)

  1. Re-read John 7:25-41. For thousands of years many people have come to the conclusion that Jesus was simply a good man or one of many accomplished prophets. What does Jesus boldly claim in this passage?
  2. Re-read John 7:37-38. Now read Exodus 17:1-6; Isaiah 44:3; Revelation 22:1, 17. What stands out to you?
  3. Re-read John 8:1-11. How is this situation a trap for Jesus? What would the Pharisees accuse Jesus of if He told them to let her go? If He told them to stone her? What was the significance of Jesus’ question in verse 10? How does Jesus’ response to the women exemplify “grace and truth”?
  4. Re-read John 8: 42-47. What does Jesus say is the ultimate test to show who “belongs to God”?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: John 10:27-30, 1 John 2:3-6, Ephesians 1:13-14, Romans 10:1-14
  5. Of the four claims Jesus makes in Chapter 8:12, 32, 51, 58; which stands out most to you? Why?

Heart Questions

  1. Would you say you are someone who has a “religious heritage”? Has this helped you or held you back in your own personal spiritual maturity? Do you see yourself passing down a “religious heritage” to others? What could that look like in your lifetime?
  2. How does the way Jesus treated the woman in Chapter 8 help you face your own sinfulness? Does it affect the way you view other’s sinfulness? How about sisters or brothers in Christ?
