John 5 and 6

John Chapter 5
John Chapter 6

Step 1: Read John chapters 5 & 6 and take notes on what stands out to you.

Step 2: Consider answering some or all of the questions below (may these be a blessing, and not a burden)

Optional Study Questions

  1. Re-read John 5:5-15. The Jewish leaders utterly ignore the fact that a man has been miraculously healed. Why? Also, Jesus says something unusual to the man He healed. Why do you suppose He warned this man?
  2. Re-read John 5:17-47. In these passages, Jesus speaks about Himself. As you examine His words, consider what they teach about Him. Write down all of the attributes you see.
  3. Re-read John 5:22, 26-27, 28-30. On what basis will Jesus judge us all? What light does John 6:27-29 shed on this topic?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: Matthew 25:31-46, Romans 2:6-11, 2 Corinthians 5:10
  4. Re-read John 6:25-33. What are the people wanting? What does Jesus want for them instead?
    1. Optional: dig a little deeper and check out: Isaiah 55:1-3
  5. Also, from John 6:25-33, what is the relationship between work and faith? Compare this passage to Ephesians 2:4-10 and James 2:14-26.

Heart Questions

  1. Jesus asked, “Do you want to get well?” Has there ever been a time when you would have said “No.”? How about “Yes.”?We saw in John 5:39-40 that the Jewish leaders studied scriptures diligently, but that did not ensure eternal life with the Father. Consider how you can use the study of scripture to cultivate a deeper love for the Father in your heart. Write down what comes to mind.
  2. John has recorded several signs that contrast the new way of Jesus with the old way of Judaism. Jesus’ new wine, made from the water of ritual purification, is far better than the old wine (2:10). Jesus’ body is the new temple that will make the old one obsolete (2:19-21). The old way of law keeping will not help a Pharisee enter the kingdom; he must be born anew (3:3). The old ways of worshiping are being replaced by worship “in spirit and truth” (4:23). Prayerfully consider if Jesus is inviting you into a “new way” of doing things in your life.
